OUR PEOPLE . . .
. . . ARE Christ Community Church
We are an independent community of believers. We are Reformed in theology and polity, being guided by elected leaders from within our congregation, while choosing to remain independent of any denominational affiliation. We are conservative and evangelical in our theology, and informal in our worship style. We believe you will find with us a safe place to explore your faith and to discover what God has planned for YOU!
OUR MISSION
to LOVE the Lord our God with everything we are,
to SEEK the guidance of the Holy Spirit in loving others as ourselves,
and to ENCOURAGE one another on this journey of becoming true disciples of Jesus Christ.
OUR HISTORY
Christ Community Church was started in the summer of 2004 by a small group of former PCUSA Presbyterians, who felt called by God to begin a new community of faith in Edmond. We now are a multi-denominational congregation, in terms of our religious backgrounds. We have former Presbyterians, Methodists, Catholics, Baptists, Pentecostals and others worshipping together, bringing a beautiful freedom and openness. As the group grew in numbers and in understanding of our particular call to discipleship, we moved from meeting in homes, to a Community Center, and then to a local theater. The church then moved to a beautiful chapel used primarily for local weddings. We now rent facilities owned by the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Edmond. They hold their worship services on Saturday, and we use the building on Sundays.
Christ Community Church members believe that each individual is called to a commitment to spiritual growth. We know we were created in God’s image to worship Him, to form Christian Community, to become disciples of Jesus Christ, to be used in mission and ministry, and to spread the good news of Christ Jesus. In addition to our weekly Worship together, we invite everyone to participate in a small group. We meet during the week in groups for further study. We offer a Sunday morning nursery and activities for children. We look forward to expanding our study and mission opportunities as God expands our membership.
OUR VISION & OUTREACH
to develop people of faith who are challenged to transform society by their Christ-like living.
As we say each Sunday, we learn together just what it means to LIVE YOUR FAITH daily. We find our inspiration, motivation, and energy for outreach to the community in Christ-like living as we meet together. Then we go forth, serving as volunteers in various ministries in our area, including:
Good Works Ministries – helping young people who have aged out of foster care
Infant Crisis Center – helping mothers and babies through support & education
Meals on Wheels – bringing hot meals to shut-ins
Calm Waters – caring for children who have suffered loss of loved ones
Alcoholics Anonymous – offering support to those in recovery
Jim Riley Outreach – providing treatment and support for recovering addicts
The Gabriel Project – offering care and aid to unwed pregnant women
HOPE Center – providing assistance to Edmond families in need
Citizens Caring for Children – providing help to foster children
and Others!
In addition, we sometimes are able to respond to neighbors or visitors to our area with special emergency needs, like onetime help with utility bills or rent, emergency transportation, clothing or other assistance. Requests are individually screened for qualification and availability.
We take our job description as Christians from Christ’s own vision statement:
Matthew 20:28 – “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." We seek to serve those around us, and to give generously in response to God’s extravagant blessings to us. COME LIVE YOUR FAITH with us! It’s God’s great adventure!!!
OUR LEADERS
Dr. Joel Baker is our Senior Pastor. His outstanding educational background includes degrees from the University of Maine, Gordon-Conwell and Fuller Theological Seminaries, and work as a Merrill Fellow at Harvard. After pastoring in churches in Florida and Ohio, Dr. Baker moved to Oklahoma to lead the 600 member First Presbyterian Church of Edmond. While growing that church to over 2,000 members, Dr. Baker was instrumental within the community by being involved in the startup of many city and statewide programs. These included Habitat for Humanity, Citizens Caring for Children – a program to help children in the foster care system, Project R.E.A.D – designed to teach illiterate adults to read, and many others. He also spent several years working with the Jim Riley Outreach, an organization whose goal is to successfully help those needing recovery from addiction to drugs and alcohol.
Mike Glass is our Music Leader. He brings a contemporary style of worship blended with accoustic and electric guitars, piano and a djembe drum (like a bongo).
Kathleen Kelm heads our Children's Ministry. Our children are safely cared for and loved by her team with lessons, stories and songs appropriate to their ages.
Our office is managed through the week by Lindy Woods. She takes care of many different areas for us, and is always happy to talk with anyone about Christ Community Church. You can call her at the church office at 285-1151 or email her.
